Sarah Phillips

Cadet Hydraulic Engineer
Year joined DMA: 2018

As a recent graduate, Hydraulic Services Design is an entirely new field for me so I have been developing my drafting skills and learning on the job through projects, particularly in the Aged Care sector, with the support of my team.

My professional background

When I was younger, I always wanted to do something that significantly contributed to bettering the lives of others. I was drawn to Engineering after having a long discussion with my physics teacher in high school who identified my passion for mathematics and science and my eagerness to make a difference.

I commenced my studies at the beginning of 2014 in Civil Engineering and Business Management. This dual degree gave me not only a solid foundation in Engineering principles, but a deep understanding of how to run projects smoothly. I look forward to using my prior knowledge, skills and my passion for Engineering to be a valuable member of the Hydraulics Team at DMA Engineers.

My specialisations

As a member of the DMA Hydraulic team, I am working primarily in the following fields:

  • Sanitary drainage
  • Stormwater Drainage
  • Roof, gutters and downpipes
  • Domestic, potable and non-potable water
  • Hot water supply
  • Fire hydrant and Fire hose reel systems
  • LP/Natural Gas reticulation
  • 3D Modelling (in particular, Revit MEP)

My key project experience

As a recent graduate, Hydraulic Services Design is an entirely new field for me so I have been developing my drafting skills and learning on the job through projects, particularly in the Aged Care sector, with the support of my team.

I enjoy working on a wide range of projects, but I have a particular interest in projects involving buildings that I have experienced as a ‘user’ such as shopping centres, food outlets and schools. I have developed a keen eye for detail in a building and often annoy my friends and family with hydraulic facts during outings!

My qualifications

  • Bachelor of Civil Engineering
  • Bachelor of Business Management

Professional Memberships, including any committee positions

  • Member of Women in Design and Construction (WIDAC).
  • Student member of Engineers Australia.

What creating inner beauty means to me

My job is a little like a movie. The audience only see what is shown on the big screen. They don’t see all the hard work put in behind the scenes such as the script writing, the outfit making and the directing. These ‘little’ roles are what brings a movie together. I call this “creating inner beauty”. I achieve inner beauty at DMA Engineers by improving the functionality of a building while also making sure that my work goes unnoticed. It’s when you know I’ve been there that there’s an issue!
