AHDC: “Small Projects, Thinking Big”

May 23, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

For this event there are four 12 minute presentations covering the following innovative projects:

Presentation 1. Clermont Residential Aged Care Facility: Fulton Trotter, with Paul Trotter & Ryan Loveday, presenting from Brisbane,
The design challenge for Fulton Trotter with the Clermont MPHS Aged Care Expansion lay in “How to deliver all the efficiencies the Service genuinely needed while still providing a warm, domestic, social and dignified environment for its permanent residents?” And fundamentally, one that is as good as the one they’d been asked to leave behind?
The scheme evolved into a new stand-alone facility of 22 bedrooms loosely connected to the hospital but with a clear differentiation of forms, materials and details that marked it as a separate function. The design required a small extension on a modest budget, to accommodate 16 extra residents within the hospital. The Architect’s role required delicate negotiation between the service and the local community, who in turn dealt with displacement and what shape their future ‘home’ would take.

Presentation 2. Case Study for Sydney Adventist Hospital: WSP, with Roneel Singh presenting from Sydney,
WSP formed a unique partnership with the Sydney Adventist Hospital, to deliver its $1m state-of-the-art Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) Conference Room, now referred to as the Cancer War Room. ‘The San’, is the largest private and not-for-profit hospital in New South Wales, and WSP undertook an extensive consultation process to understand the complexities of multi-disciplinary meetings and clinicians’ requirements.

The purpose-built facility enables clinicians to simultaneously peer-review cancer patient cases and deliver a holistic approach to their treatment. Since opening in March 2017, it has recorded a 66% increase in cases being presented, empowering clinicians with its technology by enabling the real-time sharing of information and fostering the collaboration and cross-pollination of ideas; all crucial factors in the diagnosis and treatment of critical cancer patient care.

Presentation 3. Precinct planning of hospitals using Prince Alfred Private as an example (unbuilt): Imagescape Design Studios, with Stephen Phillips presenting from Sydney,
IDS were tasked with assessing the connections between the proposed Prince Alfred Private Hospital to the adjacent public operated Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. The private hospital has an existing development consent for a design addressing a secondary street. IDS’ role was to turn this around and integrate the entrance and parking of the new private hospital into the grounds of the established public hospital. The desired result being a unified health precinct. Stephen will discuss how IDS achieved an alignment of the objectives of the private and public hospital operators.

Presentation 4. Grasping the boundaries of regulations – a fire engineering case study: Conrad Gargett, with Angelo Pagano presenting from Brisbane.
When health care facilities undertake refurbishment, often a portion of the works is associated with ensuring compliance with modern standards and regulations. When confronted with a grossly oversized fire compartment that spanned the majority of a live hot floor, Conrad Gargett were forced to think of a solution from outside the box. To do this, CG used an analysis in safety and asset protection principles to implement an alternative method of achieving compliance – it represents innovation.
