AHDC: The Benefits of Sustainable Healthcare Facilities

March 21, 2019 @ 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Speakers: Quentin Jackson, National Sustainability Leader from Aurecon, and Jeremy Mansfield, Sustainability Manager Qld/NT, Building at Lendlease, will co-present their presentation in Brisbane.

It is known that patients and workers in Green Star-certified buildings report higher health and productivity. This can lead to faster patient recovery times, increased employee satisfaction and lower staff turnover, as well as lower ongoing energy costs. The positives are too big to ignore.

The speakers have collected data for operational healthcare facilities such as the New South Wing of Flinders Medical Centre in South Australia, a five-star Green Star-certified building, that saved $400,000 a year thanks to a solar-heated hot water system, and also reduced water consumption 20% through rainwater harvesting. Austin Hospital’s Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre, the first certified Green Star healthcare project in Victoria, no longer uses any potable water for irrigation because of its 120,000 litre rainwater-storage facility. And, New Zealand’s Forte Health Building in Christchurch is working towards being a carbon zero building and has reported strong tenant and patient satisfaction. The data is shifting the focus from solely capital expenditure to operational expenditure. Achieving a Green Star rating does not need to add significant cost to a project and sustainability features have proven that they will pay for themselves repeatedly throughout the life of the asset.

Come listen to Quentin Jackson and Jeremy Mansfield talk about how they helped Sunshine Coast University Hospital (https://www.aurecongroup.com/projects/property/sunshine-coast-public-university-hospital ) achieve world leadership in Sustainability and what outcomes this is now delivering in healthcare throughout Australia and New Zealand in fully operational healthcare facilities. Learnings from recent projects in respect of ‘green agenda’, benefits realisation and post-occupancy evaluation will also be discussed.

The recently completed building at 25 King Street and the benefits its sustainable design features are delivering will also be discussed. Tours of the recently completed building will be available on the evening following this Event
