Event overview
At the Queensland Women in Leadership 2019 opening event, we welcome Queensland Minister for Employment and Small Business and Minister for Training and Skills Development, the Hon. Shannon Fentiman and Fairfield City Councillor, Dai Le to share their personal stories, motivations, strategies and speak to their commitment to delivering improved circumstances for all.

The series introduces women who provide checks and balances that are critical to a modern democracy, challenge long existing patriarchal structures and operate in difficult environments – their voices and expertise have at times been contested or dismissed.

These are stories of those who have persisted, thought differently and who have used new strategies and tools to influence change in core institutions, critical services and who work to make our modern society equitable and fair.

Gather your colleagues and join CEDA’s audience as the Women in Leadership series begins.

Meet the speakers

The Hon. Shannon Fentiman MP
Minister for Employment and Small Business and Minister for Training and Skills Development

Shannon recalls “a former senior politician was talking to me and the other local candidates (who were all blokes) and while he asked the blokes what they thought about various different policy positions, he then turned to me, told me I looked great, and asked me whether I had changed my hair?”
She then won the seat of Waterford and was immediately appointed a Minister in the Queensland Government where she currently holds portfolios critical to progressing equality and social change.

Cr. Dai Le
Councillor, Fairfield City Council and Advisory Board Member, Multicultural NSW

Dai’s passion is increasing the representation of culturally diverse men and women in mainstream institutions. She has called her experiences in politics “enabling, not empowering”. Dai arrived in Australia as a refugee in 1979 and has since worked with the ABC as a journalist, film maker and broadcaster; as a senior political advisor; and in 2016 was suspended by the New South Wales Liberal Party for running an independent ticket for Mayor against the party endorsed candidate. She was named one of the Australian Financial Review – Westpac Top 100 Women of Influence in 2014.
