CEDA: Building a Sustainable Energy Economy

March 11, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Australia’s bushfire crisis has the nation focussed on climate change and how we adapt to it.  Hear how and why we must develop new industry and jobs, diversify our economy, attract the capital and develop the expertise that can make Australia a global superpower in the low carbon future.

Speakers

Professor Ross Garnaut AC, Professor of Economics, The University of Melbourne
The Hon. Dr Anthony Lynham, Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy

<h2 ‘=””>Event overviewOrganisations and governments around the world increasingly recognise the opportunities presented by the global energy transition that’s now underway.

Maintaining energy affordability and security through transition to cleaner energy is rightly of concern. Still, constituents and communities are increasingly focused on environmental sustainability and they’re holding stakeholders to account for their actions or lack of them.

Our transition to new energy sources and a low carbon future is an economic and environmental imperative – one that presents great opportunities. How do we take advantage of them here and now?

Meet the speakers

Professor Ross Garnaut AC
Professor of Economics, The University of Melbourne

Ross Garnaut is one of Australia’s leading economists and thinkers. He recently outlined how Australia can tap economic opportunities in lowering emissions, increase renewable energy and achieve zero net emissions before 2050. He has served as Australia’s Ambassador to China; Principal Economic Adviser to Prime Minister Bob Hawke; is a founding Director of both the Lowy Institute of International Policy and Asialink; and has chaired the Bank of Western Australia, the Primary Industries Bank of Australia, SIMEC ZEN Energy Technologies and Sunshot Energy.

In 2010, he was commissioned by the Australian Government to provide an independent update to his 2008 Climate Change Review and appointed as an independent expert adviser to the Multi-Party Climate Change Committee.

The Hon. Dr Anthony Lynham
Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy

With a portfolio critical to the State economy Anthony is responsible for delivering on the Queensland Government’s commitment to create new jobs and diversify the state’s economy in these sectors while reducing emissions, acting on climate change and working toward 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030. Before leading this work Anthony held other key portfolios. He has worked as a maxillofacial surgeon; is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh; and is a White Ribbon Ambassador.
