Bupa National Cricket Centre

The Bupa National Cricket Centre is one of DMA’s cornerstone projects. Located at the prestigious Allan Border Field and the headquarters of the Queensland Cricket Association, this world-class Centre of Excellence is a four-level building featuring four indoor cricket pitches, one indoor bowling simulator and a large variety of sport science facilities.
World-class facility to keep Australia at the top of world cricket

Cricket Australia needed a high-performance facility to foster the growth of Australia’s next generation of cricketers. The Centre of Excellence (COE) was the first of its kind in Australia and had many specific design requirements, the most unique of which was the need for an indoor wicket. The COE had a variety of different rooms, ranging from lecture halls, to hydrotherapy areas and gymnasiums to include in the design.

World-class engineering solutions for a world-class facility

DMA played a key role in helping create a premier sport and training facility by designing innovative and ground-breaking solutions to accommodate the complex building requirements. This included:

  • Introducing heating and humidity control for the indoor wickets using humidifiers and air conditioning, to allow the centre to replicate playing conditions from around the world.
  • Meeting the desired lighting, power and humidity requirements across the facility such as ensuring lecture halls had basic power and lighting to AS2293 while the gymnasium had lighting that met AS2560 as well as ample power outlets available for the various machines within the room.
  • Installing humidity control in hydrotherapy areas to enhance recovery periods.

We liaised with Energex in relation to the unique demands of the onsite transformer. Cricket Australia also wanted to retrofit a solar power system, so we ensured they would have the flexibility to incorporate solar power in the future.

Going the extra mile

The solutions provided by our team were instrumental in helping deliver an impressive facility that will take Cricket Australia into the future. By truly understanding what the client was setting out to create, we delivered solutions to address the challenges presented by various temperature, lighting, power and humidity requirements for one building. The successful implementation of these solutions has meant the client has a facility that will expose Australia’s cricketers to ground-breaking sport science technology in a high-performance environment. The facility is fit-for-purpose today but will also stand the test of time.
