Indooroopilly Shopping Centre Refurbishment

Indooroopilly Shopping Centre is a major regional shopping centre in Brisbane’s west, owned by Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation and managed by Eureka Funds Management. Initially constructed in 1970, in 2010 the centre was revitalised with a significant ($450 million) redevelopment.

The DMA Engineers team were initially engaged by Eureka for preparation of D&C tender documents for electrical and vertical transport design. We subsequently worked for Stowe Australia to complete the design and provide construction period consulting engineering services. Other companies we worked closely with on the project included:

  • Brookfield Multiplex (Construction)
  • RCP (Project Management)
  • RLB (QS)
  • PDT (Architect)

A particular challenge with this project was the extremely constrained space on site, which limited the space available for staging and construction activities.

The main features of the project included:

  • Northern Extension: Reconfiguration of Myer (15400m² GLA) to levels 2 and 3, relocation of Kmart to level 1 (6500m² GLA), additional specialty stores on all 3 retail levels, new dock facilities for Myer, Kmart, Woolworths and specialty stores.
  • Eastern Extension: Second Department Store (14200m² GLA) on levels 2 and 3, new loading dock at basement level, plus additional 2 levels of car park below and 3 levels of car parking above the Department Store.
  • Eastern Centre – East: Create new parallel mall on existing levels 2 and 3 to provide direct connection from Myer to new department store, with additional specialty stores on both sides. Create new fresh food offer on level 1 including provision for centre connection from the new lower-level car parking.
  • Western Extension: New 6th level to existing car park along the entire length of Musgrave Road.
  • Southern Extension: Expansion of the centre at street level (Station Road) to create an external Plaza precinct/restaurant area, the creation of an entrance to retail level 2 from Stamford Road, and the integration of the entry and plaza precinct with the existing food court. Refurbishment of the existing Target store and plant facilities plus a new loading dock. Reconfigure the existing carpark on level 2 to create a new mall for mini majors and speciality stores.

The project was completed on schedule and opened to the public in 2014.
